Propaganda: The Media and Ghana’s 2020 Presidential Election Petition

This article examines the extent to which media bias is featured in reportage of Ghana’s 2020 Presidential Election Petition. The Petition was filed by main candidate opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama who challenged declaration Electoral Commission (EC) that President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) won election. Using a purposive sampling approach focusing on print media, this paper assesses how three local newspapers-the NDC aligned WhatsApp news online, NPP Daily Statesman online and State-sponsored Graphic covered event played coverage election petition. study found propaganda prominently petition constituted substantial risk undermining press freedom country’s growing democracy. recommends, amongst others, training for journalists detect statements from story actors obviate potential publishing propaganda-driven could threaten peace stability country.
